City and Colour

From screamo-aggressive rock band, Alexisonfire, Dallas Green jumped into softer, way less aggressive music in his individual string, City and Colour. The Canadian-born musician started this project in 2005 and growing strong ever since. City and Colour creatively derived from his own name, Dallas: a city and Green: a colour. Simple! His music flows like a poem; heart-wrenching, soothing and can make someone can fall in love with it all at once.

His idealism in his music also shows through his interviews when he explains about the song-writing process. He obviously put his hands on his work, make sure everything is in line. It is vivid that he invested his emotions within the songs and album, which makes it more personal as if we are reading, or perhaps listening, to his diary. And what's better than musicians who sincerely putting their heart out into their work?

The more you listen to his lyrics, the more his image is shaped as charming and articulately poetic - even when he swears it sounded like a poetry. There are a lot of death imagery in his songs, especially on his third album Little Hell, but somehow he is able to make death sounds just as kind as life. Dallas says he relies his inspiration when things seem going down hill in life, but his critical visions upon his music obviously has brought him into a higher, and better level. With this kind of music, this world will be a much better place.

Band Edition: General Fiasco

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I found them through Burberry acoustic session on YouTube, here & they stole my attention in a heartbeat.

The Irish-born band, General Fiasco, represent the sound of British rock with catchy lyrics. You can imagine three young lads kicking up the amplifier with a gentle rock, not too loud but enough out of their songs. Nevertheless, they also nailed the acoustic version of their songs without losing their basic identity.

There was a bit of change in formation when their former drummer decided to moved to the States. Stephen from the rhythm guitar assigned to take roll on the drum and recently they just added new additional guitarist, Stuart. And guess what? they still sounded rad. Owen's high note voice, the vocalist, set the particular signature sign of the band so nobody would miss interpret General Fiasco with another band.

Their debut album, Buildings, consist of 15 tracks includes 4 acoustic version. Ever So Shy chosen as the hit single from the album and I could not agree more. Their song titles and lyrics are simple, easy to relate with young generation nowadays. Totally worth to notice. Here's their Myspace & official video of Ever So Shy

Music Edition: Tim Ferguson

"I'll never be the knot you want to tie.."
(End of the Night - Tim Ferguson)

It's funny how you stumble upon something randomly and there came the thought where you didn't particularly know you were looking for it but as soon it was in front of you, you'd say, "Where have you been?" That was the kind of feeling when I found Tim Ferguson. I found this amazing musician through youtube when I was on my way back from London to Bournemouth. In the midst of mundane two-hour coach journey home, I was scrolling through my tumblr's dashboard, then I found a Pop Punk Goes Acoustic video that my friend reblogged - this  instantly caught my attention because it listed most of the songs I grew up with. Honestly, I rarely bought anything through video; by all means I usually skipped video post on tumblr, but this time, I stopped and spare a couple minutes to watched. From that moment on, I could not stop listening.

There is something about his voice that drawn my attention immediately. He is so genuine; there is this sense of security flows when you listen to his songs. It is hard to elaborate more without sounding very cheesy and all but to be honest, it is that hard being objective for something this good. His kind of music hums some sort of hidden invitation to stay - as if you just find a new home. It welcomes and comforts you in the same time. You just want to lie down and relish every passing second and find yourself being at peace with the world. Too bad he lives far away in the States. I'd really like to see him live.

To have a brief sense of his music, in my opinion, it sounds like a mixture of NeverShoutNever with a little mild touch of Death Cab For Cutie calming-on-the-edge-of-darkness kind of tone. It is obvious, acoustic guitar suits his voice character very well. He has this unique bit, where he almost sounds like he dragged his deep voice yet he managed to pull it right. And also when he hit the high note, it fits the whole thing. His cover for I Can't Make You Love Me by Bon Iver assured me even more because not everyone is able to do justice on covering Bon Iver's song. I mean, he definitely can make anybody love him. However, if you don't fancy all calm and standstill tunes, you can still have the best of both world through his other band project, April Chase, where you can have louder beat, and not being less amazing than his solo. So, listen. He's too good to miss.

Music Edition: Owen Hooper

This, kind of a long story. But this how it starts. A friend of mine, Arky, sent me this link of a video about Jakarta made by foreign student, whom currently joining a student exchange programme in one of state high school in Indonesia. Being far from home, that particular video had successfully made me homesick. Finished with one video, I seek for more. Turned out he has a couple videos about Jakarta. There was this one, he had himself recording his own original song called Bread as the soundtrack of the video.
Not exactly fully aware I have been repeating the video more than three times, I noticed the song was rather ear catching. Then that how it was I stranded upon this myspace of his, Owen Hooper. I just can not help but to share because this definitely worth a notice!

His songs are mostly simple soft-acoustic. Easy to listen, some of them are tend to sound a bit dark in a way yet you can still hear life within the songs. For Hands Held on Gravel Path, it sounded as if his voice is meant to sing this tune! This song is perfect for getting lost between your thoughts while wandering off by the street. Moving on, there is something about She Hits, Asleep. bound me speechless. I can hardly describe, mixture between The Black Keys with Death Cab for Cutie, maybe? To be honest, this is not the kind of song would be in my 25 most played playlist in iTunes personally, but hell, this surely climb on to the top 5. If I really have to choose my favorite among all, I have got to say, things run tight between Hands Held on Gravel Path or She Hits, Asleep.

However, in a couple songs, taking The Little One and Let There Be Love as examples, the quality of recording still quite low. The echo behind kind of intrude the overall value. I believe, if its recorded in a proper studio or such, the songs would be flawless! This boy sure know how to write and sing a song! He should sign a record label. Just saying. So, spare three minutes to check his myspace page and take a quick listen. Then I'm sure you're going to spend the rest of half an hour (or more) glued to the playlist!

Band Edition: Meet Me By Sunrise

It has been quite cloudy throughout Jakarta's music scene lately, the usual weekend gig that I used to attend had lost its existence between the radar. But among the minor crowds, this band managed to popped out to the public eye-sight. And mine's especially -- I cannot help to write about them. Speaking of the devil, it's Meet Me By Sunrise. First of many, I personally have to give big kudos for whoever came up with the name. Meet Me By Sunrise. It's not too cliche, not too band name-ish, not too much; it's simple, precise and it's there. As soon you read or hear the name, there's a chime of hope, you know this going to be good. And  yes, they are worth to listen.

This band consist of four young boys, simultaneously giving such a fresh soul into their music. Lan Alexander on  vocal/guitar, has this Gaskarth-like kind of voice, where you just know he owns the right to sing. He has the voice that qualified to be ears' best friend. On guitar/synths/keys/vocal/pretty-much-everything-here-there-a-bit, there's the multi-talented Dion Andrew; his skill is surely undoubted when his fingers know what to do to create such a great outcome of rhythm, based on my judgement on MMBS TV -- a youtube video where they record their routines on camera. The third member on bass/vocal, is Christophe Renato, slapping the thick bass strings daringly, adding the blast deep volume hand in hand with the guitar; hey, song wouldn't sound complete without bass -- as a fellow bassist speaking. Last but not least, Diandra Indrabayu on drums, let alone the loud beat, the drums sure has the good deal of role on giving more air to the songs as it breathe and sounded more alive.

Little more details regarding their songs, for all All Time Low/Simple Plan/The Downtown Fiction die hard fans out there, I can assure you, you are going to love Meet Me By Sunrise. Sound of power pop with touch of rock & semi-acoustic is their thing. For the lyrics, it is very easy to relate, young love,  disappointing heartbreak; ear-catching phrases, definitely not crappy ass quality. My personal favorite song would Frankly My Dear, I Don't Give A Damn. But as I listen to their tracks these past hours, I have got to say it is kind of hard to decide, they are all good! Jakarta (Never Looked So Good) makes me want to go out on late-drive around town and watch the skyline. And man, "I hope you'd die in a car crash baby" phrase from Hanging On A Wake Up Call just would not get out of my head. Only Stars sounded less appealing than the others, maybe because the others are pretty much contains more content than this one.

Fair to say, go and take a look for yourself, their live performance. And what are the odds, they are about to release their EP in three weeks! October 15th. Too bad I can't make it as I'm leaving this town within a week.. Anyway, details on their facebook or follow their official band twitter, make sure you are not going to miss it! And maybe, if you would like to booked them on events, please do not hesitate to contact them through their facebook, they seemed nice! Better yet, interested to signed them? They would be a phone call away. All and all, so glad to have them as local band   x

Band Edition: The Scene Aesthetic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

They are The Scene Aesthetic consist of two young americans, Andrew De Torres and Eric Bowley. You will fall for them within the minute their songs caught your ears, just like I did. Their easy-listening, semi-acoustic set only with guitars, a little touch of electro-keyboard & melts my heart immediately.

The combination between two different types of voice sounds like as if it was a match made in heaven. Some says lyrics are the heart beat in a song, The Scene Aesthetic provide such enticing lyrics no-junk-kind-of-shit. Of course, the lyrics are mainly revolves around love, but TSA managed not to make it sound all to soppy and bullshit. It sounds sincere at its best.

Their recent album is Brother and Sisters; 18 tracks 3 acoustic version -- with the single, Beauty In The Breakdown. But my personal favorite song have to be Landon's Summer Diary. Or Never gonna let this go. Ah, it is quite hard to choose. You go on decide yourself. Buy the album on iTunes. Totally worth to hear & buy! Enjoy!

Here's their myspace, twitter and YouTube.
